Notes on the method
On behalf of APT (Associazione Produttori Televisivi, today renamed APA, Associazione Produttori Audiovisivi,) e-Media has carried out a market survey on the audiovisual production in Italy with the aim of assessing its value and identifying the main market trends.
The national audiovisual production in its three main segments (television products, motion pictures and products firstly exploited on Internet / OTT platforms) hasn’t yet not found a measure of its economic volume. In other words, there have been no researches available so far that can allow us to understand the main and most recent basic trends of the sector on a quantitative basis.
Indicators such as the total value of production by genres, the primary destination platforms, export volumes, the contribution of foreign investors, just to mention a few, could be extremely useful to understand a sector that although of great relevance has been scarcely “exploited” by quantitative and market surveys.
Sharing the client’s objectives and methodology, the study was carried out between April and December 2018 on the basis of different survey methods:
- Field surveys
- Desktop studies
Field surveys
- Direct consultations were conducted with 10 operators within the production sector for a first market overview. Following this first analysis, qualitative and quantitative questionnaires were dispensed to 22 managers of main production companies. The results obtained were supplemented by further phone consultations that were also useful for perfecting the market data processing. All data provided by each individual operator were bound by a non-disclosure agreement signed between e-Media srl and the operators themselves.
- Direct consultations were also carried out with some broadcasters
Desktop studies
- Desktop studies were conducted by e-Media researchers based on the consultation of corporate literature, gray literature and an extremely wide range of documents that provided qualitative and quantitative information on the market under investigation. In particular, the company budgets of 330 audiovisual production companies were analyzed, eventually cutting them down to 255 (only those that produced at least one title distributed theatrically, aired on TV or on OTT platforms in 2016 and/or 2017.)
- The desktop studies also analyzed existing research reports on the audiovisual production market in Italy and abroad (France and UK) and examined a large number of statements / interviews released by market players.
- In total more than 900 documents referring to the market under investigation were consulted and analyzed.
When consulting the data of this research, it is important to keep in mind that many of the data presented are the result of estimates, even temporary, delivered in the absence of information processed and published by official sources.
e-Media srl has carried out numerous checks on the data reported but cannot offer any guarantee on their accuracy and reliability.
In no case those who consult this document, even only in part, should take strategic or commercial decisions on the basis of the data reported which are presented here only as estimates that need further research and analysis.
