The weight of SVOD platforms

Since 2017, the Italian audiovisual environment has recorded the arrival of OTT providers, the investments of which are led by international SVoD key players.

In this short-medium term, the growing weight of Internet providers already seems destined to grow thanks to the development of the market, its growing competition, and the entry of new players who will invest to support their own OTT platforms (Disney, Hulu, Apple, YouTube, etc.). This trend is also supported by a renewed interest in domestic products that increasingly prove to be suitable for exploitation on a global level.

Based upon a conservative estimate, by 2022 the commissioning weight of Internet platforms could reach about 9-10% of the total value of Italy’s audiovisual industry. Many factors could influence and increase this estimate, that might reach 14-15%. Among these: the boosting expansion of the market; the arrival of Internet / OTT players whose productions today are still far from the SVoD competition; the development of domestic OTT platforms – also through consortia.
