Breakdown of the added value and employment composition by productive classes

On the employment front, the picture seems substantially confirmed. In 2017 alone, the number of employees fell by 3.4%, going against the national average +1.1%. Considering the last six years, the picture is even worse, with the number of employees down by 6.8%, which is essentially due to the performance of Film&TV Production (-19.9%; with a reduction of about 3,500 employees).

Among the five classes that make up the audiovisual sector, two seem to prevail: TV Programming and Broadcasting (53.2% in terms of added value and 51.8% as for employment) and Film&TV Production (28.5% and 28.8%, respectively).

The far-from-marginal role of this latter segment explains the unsatisfactory performance of the audiovisual sector, essentially due to a reshaping of the internal balance of the supply chain linked to the technological innovations introduced in recent years.

The other three sectors, according to the audiovisual sector classification suggested by Istat, account for less than a quarter, both in terms of added value and employment. Exhibition holds a stake of 10.8% per added value and 12.0% per employment while Post-production (4.9% and 4.8% respectively) and Distribution (2.6% for both indicators) perform less incisive figures.
