  • Not including the production of sports and news content, the overall value of investments in original Italian titles (Fiction, Documentaries, Animation, Entertainment, and Other genres) is approximately €1,800m1 in 2022.
  • After the post-Covid-19 pandemic “rebound”, the market continues to grow at significant rates driven above all by investments made in the online environment (VOD) and, in general, due to the Tax Credit for Productions which plays an important role in the sector.

  • Between 2017 and 2022, investments in the production of theatrical films have more than doubled, going from €263m to €581m (+121%)2. Production has significantly grown in 2022 compared to the previous year: +17%.
  • Investments in works exploited mainly on linear TV (free and pay TV) reach approximately €1 billion3.
  • Online production is growing at a significant rate and despite concerning almost exclusively three genres (Fiction, Documentary, and Animation), it is already worth nearly a third of the overall television production.
  • Investments in VOD works are worth 15% of the domestic production investments.

  • TV & VOD fiction genre3 (Movies and Series) is the leading genre in terms of investment volume (55%) followed by Other genres (Entertainment, Talk Shows, Magazines, In-depth programs, etc.). Documentaries and Animation shows are experiencing significant growth in production (the latter with strong expansion in the VOD segment)

  • Considering only TV & online (VOD) feature-length works (one-shot works or serials), overall investments in documentaries stand at €67m in 20223. These are more than tripled compared to 2017 and 2018 when they were only approximately €18 million and when Linear TV was the only production platform.
  • Supported by the Tax Credit, the growth in documentary production has taken place thanks to greater investments in productions primarily intended for television and, naturally, to major investments in works produced for VOD consumption.
  • A similar trend of growth in values is also recorded in theatrical productions where feature-length documentaries go from an average of 40 films per year between 2017 and 2018 to an average annual volume of almost 100 titles produced between 2021 and 2022. The overall production costs have increased significantly, going from €10m for the year 2017 to €38m in 20222.

  • Considering only TV & online (VOD) feature-length works (one-shot works or serials), overall investments in animated titles produced in Italy for the year 2022 are estimated at €116m3with a sharp increase compared to former years. The increase is essentially due to the growth of investments in works intended mainly for online exploitation (VoD) which were almost completely non-existent until 2019
  • The values for 2021 and 2022 also include works of Italian nationality but in minor co-participation (Italian companies owning less than 50% rights).
  • As mentioned, the growth of animation production is mainly determined by investments in titles with VOD distribution and high-budget productions.
