Women employees
The gender distribution of employees in the audiovisual sector can be obtained using 2021 Istat data from the Statistical Archive of Active Businesses.
Compared to 2020, the share of women employees within the supply chain remains at 42.8% (improved, even if by a tenth percentage point), a figure above the overall average (40.1%).
The highest value is in distribution, where women significantly exceed half of the total, 58.2%, still increasing from last year (56.9%). The second sector with the highest presence of female employees is exhibition (47.9%), although the value has slightly dropped compared to 2020 (48.2%).

Theatrical, video & TV post-production is still the sector with the lowest presence of female employees, even though the value has grown by +0.2 compared to 2020 (39.3% vs. 39.1%). Also, theatrical production has a lower-than-average incidence of female employees (40.9%), while the presence of female employees in TV programming & broadcasting activities is overall growing (42.4%; in 2020, the value was 42.0%). Looking at the distribution of employees in the sectors, female presence is higher in exhibitions (9.5% of female employees vs. 7.7% of male employees) and in theatrical, video & TV distribution activities (4.7% vs. 2.5%).

The absolute presence of female employees appears to be slightly lower in theatrical, video & TV production activities, counting 34.9% of female employees compared to the 37.7% share of men and to a more limited extent within the TV programming & broadcasting activities (48.0% vs 48.7%).
