Women managers

Through the Chamber of Commerce registers, it is possible to explore a second area where the presence of women in the audiovisual sector can be assessed: management. By selecting specific roles , it is possible to isolate the number of women managers, who amount to 2,594 in 2023, slightly increasing compared to 2022 (+0.9%). Once again, however, the 22.9% share is lower than the overall industry’s 24.9% (slightly falling compared to 2022), with a gap increase compared to the previous year equal to two percentage points.

6 More specifically, this goes through a selection of 93 managers within the macro categories “Managing Director” or “Other offices”, such as President, Chief Executive Officer, General Manager, etc.

In 2023, the share of women managers increased within the theatrical, video & TV post-production activities (going from 20.8% to 21.7%) due to a higher growth of women compared to the positive men’s trend (+10.9% vs. +5.2%), recording positive results in terms of general improvement in top management roles.

In other audiovisual fields, the female presence remained stable, as in Exhibition (which decreased for both male and female managers, although with a 25.0% share, this sector still records a high count of women managers), or decreased slightly, as in the production and distribution of theatrical, video and TV activities (22.0% production, 25.4% distribution, which is still however the sector with the highest presence of female management) or decreased significantly, as in the case of TV programming & broadcasting activities, dropping from 24.9% to 23.4%.

The 2022-2023 interseasonal variation for women managers in the audiovisual sector highlights slower dynamics: if the overall average is +1.9%, men have grown by +2.3% while women only by +0.9%.
The negative trend of Exhibition activities continues, with an overall decrease in managers of -1.6% both for men and women, while a significant setback in theatrical, video & TV distribution activities (-6.5%) stresses the drop of women compared to men (-8.1 compared to -5.9%).

2021/2022 dynamics of women and men in corporate management within the audiovisual core by production sectors

The dynamics of the TV programming & broadcasting sector are positive, with managers growing overall by 11.3%, with a more asserted dynamism for men (+13.4%) than for women (+4.8%). Equally positive are the data for post-production activities (+6.4%), where women are livelier (+10.9% vs. +5.2%). The interseasonal variation share of managers in production is +2.3%, specifically +2.6% for men and +1.4% for women.

Finally, in the dynamics of under-35 managers, there has been a significant 9.7% growth compared to 2022 for theatrical, video, and TV production activities, thus becoming the area with the greatest young management impact (compared to an average of 8.2% for the entire audiovisual sector) and where men’s incidence is 9.0%.
Young women’s post-production activities have dropped from 11.9% to 8.0% (bear in mind that the sector’s lower numbers can determine fluctuations in the shares detected) compared to a share of 4.0% for men.

As for other sectors, it is worth noting a decrease in the presence of young managers in TV programming & broadcasting activities, where the incidence of under-35 managers drops from 7.7% in 2022 to 5.7% in 2023, although higher than the men’s share (4.3%).
