Overall, tallying the estimated production cost of all Italian titles produced for Cinema, TV, and online platforms (all scripted and unscripted genres and subgenres), the 2023 value of audiovisual production has exceeded €2bn, recording an annual growth rate (CAGR) of 11.6% starting from 2017.
The 2023 value (€2,041bn) has nearly doubled the 2017 figure.

Compared to 2022, production volumes for the three primary platforms have been growing: Cinema (+21%), TV (+8%), and VoD (+16%).
There has been significant growth in theatrical film production, reaching figures never seen before (354 films produced in 2023 vs. 314 in 2022) with a rising effect on the total production value.
Television remains the most important means in terms of value, certainly thanks to the weight of the production of entertainment titles and other unscripted genres, currently marginal in the VoD sector.

As per previous years, all genres (Fiction, Animation, Documentaries, Entertainment, etc.) have grown in 2023, particularly those supported by tax credits, which are the main component of public aid.
Fiction series and movies were worth approximately 74% of the video-television scripted genres in 2023, overall totaling nearly €950ml, and growing thanks to Animation and Documentaries, which, compared to 2017, quadruple their value.
Spending on entertainment and other genres (Talk Shows, Magazines, In-depth programs, etc.) for TV and VoD totaled €390m in 2023.

In 2023, the production value of Animation titles (for TV and VoD) continued growing, increasing from €102 to €167m. In the same period, Animation VoD titles have grown at an average annual rate of 27%.
These figures include works of Italian nationality in minor co-production (Italian companies owning less than 50%).
The growth of animation production between 2021 and 2023 is mainly determined by investments in titles with a primary VoD distribution and some extremely high-budget productions, which alone were worth more than half of the total production value.

In 2023, the production value of documentary titles (for TV and VoD) grew significantly from €65 to €77 with an average annual growth rate of 27%.
The growth of TV and VoD documentary titles strongly supported by Tax Credits, also characterized the production volume of theatrical documentaries, which have increased from 41 (25% of the total) in 2017 to 119 (39% of the total) in 2023.
