The data shown in the report (&#8220;\u00c9tude sur le tissu\n\u00e9conomique du secteur de la production audiovisuelle&#8221;) are unfortunately\nupdated to 2017-2018 but clearly describe a growing sector, both in terms of\nthe number of active companies and in terms of turnover.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The total number\nof television production companies formally registered with code 5911A (the\nequivalent to our counterpart Ateco code), stood at 4,541 at the end of 2018.\nThe value records a significant increase compared to year 2000 (1,398\ncompanies) and to 2010 (3,218 companies). Overall, the turnover of this precise\nsector grossed \u20ac 3.1 billion in 2017 with a compound annual growth rate of 3% between\n2010 and 2017. As reported in the income statements, it should be noted that\nthis value includes all revenues, and therefore also those deriving from\nactivities of other segments within the audiovisual supply chain (technical\nservices, distribution, etc.), not directly related to the main activity\ncarried out by these companies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Again in 2017, the\ntop 50 companies (size-wise) totaled nearly 40% of the volume of business,\nwhile the first 200 about 70%.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The expenditure of\nFrench networks for original works and on the basis of the regulatory\nobligations to which they are subject was equal to \u20ac 855 million in 2018 on a\ntotal programming expenditure (all genres and formats produced and acquired in\nstock and flow) estimated at \u20ac 5.4 billion. Just under half of the original\nproduction expenditure (\u20ac 405 million) originated from the public broadcasting\ncompany France T\u00e9l\u00e9visions. The remainder was divided among all commercial\noperators of free and pay-TV (TF1, M6, Canal plus). <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Also in 2018,\ntelevision production received a good \u20ac 291 million from CNC (Center national\ndu cin\u00e9ma et de l&#8217;image anim\u00e9e), split between \u201cselective\u201d and \u201cautomatic\u201d funds.\nCNC itself provided \u20ac 311 million to the film industry in the same year to\nreach a support expenditure for the entire audiovisual sector which stood at\naround \u20ac 700 million (film + TV and other digital areas, such as video games,\netc.). CNC contributions for television production must then be added to the\nresources of the territorial agencies which in 2019 covered \u20ac 35 million for television\nproduction alone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As for the\ninvestments of SVoD operators (Netflix and Amazon in the lead), CSA does not\nprovide data, but these are provided by CNC for 2019, reporting an SVoD\nexpenditure of \u20ac 53 million (\u20ac 52 million invested by Netflix and just one by\nAmazon).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Overall,\nconsidering all investments and public and private contributions, in 2018 the\noriginal French production that benefitted from support policies\n(&#8220;production audiovisuelle aid\u00e9e&#8221;) for the total genres of fiction,\nanimation, documentaries, television adaptations of theatrical and musical\nworks, and programs of cultural interest, was worth approximately \u20ac 1.55\nbillion, while in 2019, \u20ac 1.6 billion, that is, 30% of the total programming expenditure\nof the top 4 television groups.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The French product\ngenerates a foreign market value that has grown significantly over the past ten\nyears. Cross-border sales and pre-emptions were worth \u20ac 136 million in 2010 and\n\u20ac 247 million in 2019. And a contribution from international co-productions\nmust be added to these figures: \u20ac 63 million in 2010 and \u20ac 78 million in 2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Finally, particularly\nsignificant is the revenue produced on foreign markets per genre: animation\nproducts alone generated 77.4 million in 2019, that is, 40% of the total sales;\nfiction and documentaries, respectively 24% and 22%. The results of the\nanimation genre on foreign markets underline its constant growth since 2010,\nwhen foreign sales were worth only 35 million, meaning 33% of the total. North\nAmerica and Europe are the geographical areas of greatest export of the French\nproduct, but Asia is growing strongly, as well.
