{"id":2534,"date":"2020-07-29T17:51:10","date_gmt":"2020-07-29T15:51:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/ricerche.apaonline.it\/news\/2020-la-nuova-geografia-dei-documentari-in-italia\/"},"modified":"2020-07-29T17:52:23","modified_gmt":"2020-07-29T15:52:23","slug":"2020-la-nuova-geografia-dei-documentari-in-italia","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/ricerche.apaonline.it\/en\/articles\/2020-la-nuova-geografia-dei-documentari-in-italia\/","title":{"rendered":"2020: The new doc \u201cgeography\u201d in Italy"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p>For\nthe audiovisual arena, 2020 will be remembered as a watershed: our\nindustry has become dramatically self- aware and conscious of the\nchoices that need to be made for the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Beyond\nhaving forced all players to dwell on the field and its system, this\nawareness has unsealed new production and distribution prospects, as\nwell as palpable business opportunities for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As\nknown, OTT platforms have benefited the most until now from the\ncurrent situation: in the rest of the world, but also in Italy,\nNetflix and Amazon in particular have drawn the audience closer to\ntheir offer in an important and significant way from all viewpoints.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Among\nthe genres that have been enhanced by the circumstances, in addition\nto tv series naturally, are documentaries, both as medium-length\nseries but also as single episodes, for the first time coming across\na new audience that the industry had failed to meet or build loyalty\nwith, due to the somewhat asphyxiated domestic film lineup and the\nexcessive thrift of free television programming. During the lockdown,\nthe ability to quickly access documentary content on Netflix or\nAmazon, but also on Raiplay and Chili, made viewers discover the\nvalue and importance of the global modern documentary production.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So\nit is in light of this context that we should read a list of new\nappointments, aimed at innovating, compared to the past, the\ndocumentary production in Italy.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The\nfirst of these notable appointments comes from a long &#8220;battle&#8221;\nwaged by APT \u2013 and today by APA \u2013 and successfully implemented\nwith the creation of a documentary division for the public network\nRai. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Journalist\nDuilio Giammaria has in fact been nominated director of Rai Doc and\nwill be leading a structure that at the moment is taking its first\nsteps within Rai and the world of documentary production. Mr.\nGiammaria covers an important signpost, offering the Italian\naudiovisual production a first-rate partner on the international\narena, in order to target those valuable co-productions that until\nnow had been precluded \u2013 definitely a step forward, destined to\ngive an important driving force to documentary productions, enhanced\nby the possibility of realizing high-budget projects.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In\nthis sense, Maria Pia Ammirati\u2019s succession to Roberto Cicutto\u2019s\nPresidency of Istituto Luce should be seen in an extremely positive\nlight. The former is bringing in dowry to Istituto Luce &#8211; one of the\nmain documentary producers and distributors &#8211; her position as\nPresident of Rai Teche and therefore the Rai archive. Documentary\nfilmmakers know very well, in fact, that for all titles related to\npast and not only, Luce and Rai archives are not only strategic, but\neven more, fundamental. The intent avowed by Minister Franceschini to\nmerge the two huge deposits of our country\u2019s historical memory,\nretaining a technical lapse necessary to merge the different storage\nsystems and software, could actually lead in reasonable time to the\ncreation of one of the largest archives worldwide with millions of\nimages and hours of footage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not\nonly the public arena is working towards real-life production: in\nspring, Netflix has appointed its head of documentary productions for\nItaly: Giovanni Bossetti, a highly experienced professional,\nextremely appreciated by those who have worked with him. The choice\nof having a documentary manager for our country is clearly a proof,\nif ever it was needed, of how much the production rooting process,\nafter Series and Film, is heading toward completion, finally\nincluding Real-life Cinema, which has always played an important role\nimportant in the Los Gatos company offer.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Not\nonly distributors are adding documentaries to their lineup: Palomar,\nthe company founded by Carlo Degli Esposti, has launched Palomar Doc,\nthe new documentary division of the company, partner of Mediawan\nGroup. The division, committed to the development and production of\nfilms and documentary series for cinema, TV, and OTT was entrusted to\nAndrea Romeo, founder and director from 2005 to 2019 of the Italian\ndocumentary festival Biografilm.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nSame situation for Fandango,\nDomenico Procacci&#8217;s company, which has always been particularly\ncareful to the production and distribution of Italian and foreign\ndocumentaries. Here, Eleonora Savi was appointed Head of Production,\nwhile Cosetta Lagani has wrapped her time at Stand By Me, shifting to\nMinerva Pictures as Chief of Scripted and Documentary Productions, a\nrole created purposely for her. \n<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\nPrestigious personalities,\ntherefore, for new roles, while awaiting the effervescence of the\nmarket to finally recover and boost with the return to normal after\nthe lockdown.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For the audiovisual arena, 2020 will be remembered as a watershed: our industry has become dramatically self- aware and conscious of the choices that need to be made for the future.
